Webinar 5 - Your Data Privacy in a Nutshell: RA 10173

Event Title: “Your Data Privacy in a Nutshell: RA 10173”

I. Details of the event/activity

The title of the webinar I attended was "Your Data Privacy in a Nutshell: RA 10173." It was held on October 12, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. It was led by DICT Region V and was conducted on Zoom and broadcasted on Facebook Live. The resource speaker for this was Engr. Odine Raphael Areola, Engineer III, DICT Region V – Bicol.

II. Reflections the webinar/activity give rise to (learnings)

The Data Privacy Act of 2012 (DPA), also known as Republic Act No. 10173, seeks to protect personal data in information and communications systems used by both the public and private sectors. I recalled all the lessons taught to us in the subject Information Assurance and Security during our 3rd year, 1st semester.

We will easily grasp the lessons taught here because we already have knowledge about topics such as Protection of Personal Information, Global Data Privacy Standards, Trust and Confidence, Legal Compliance and Accountability, Protection against Identity Theft and Fraud, Government Transparency and Accountability, and Balancing Privacy and Security.

The important thing we need to understand here is the data subject, who is an individual whose personal information, sensitive personal information, or privileged information is being processed. So, when there is processing of our data, we are referred to as data subjects.

And there are 2 kinds of personal data, which are Personal Data (PI): identity of an individual, Sensitive Personal Information (SPI): Specially established by law to be kept classified, and Privileged Information (PI): Husband-Wife, Lawyer-Client, Doctor-Patient, and etc.

And our rights as a data subject are important for us to know.

III. Reflections on possibilities on implementing some of the webinar input on a practical level. (Practical application of learnings)

In the lessons taught to us in the subject Information Assurance and Security, as well as in this webinar, we also need to understand how the Data Privacy Act of 2012 - RA 10173 works. This is essential for us because in the systems we are developing, we will have data collection from our users, and we will be handling their personal data or sensitive personal information.

Also included here is how we can maintain their trust in providing their personal data to our developed system. It is also an advantage for us to know all of this because we are users of various social media platforms, and how we can also safeguard our data and our rights as a data subject.

“If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear.”

This is a dangerous myth. Privacy is a fundamental human right.

IV. Positive feedback (on the event organization)

The important aspects that we need to understand regarding Data Privacy have been clearly explained.

V. Suggestions for improvements to be made/ consider for future activities

Include sessions that feature users sharing their experiences, challenges, and expectations regarding data privacy. This provides a human-centered approach, making the content relatable and relevant to the participants.
